Jagaraga temple of  Singaraja is not an ordinary temple in Bali. This temple is a witness of the struggle of the Balinese people against the colonialist. The interesting thing about this temple is the existence of reliefs that tell about the lives of people in the Dutch colonial era.

The reliefs here are so different from the reliefs located in other temples. Here, you can find reliefs showing the existence of an ancient car with an armed man driving it. In addition, there are also reliefs that illustrate the condition of the plane crashing, Dutch people who are drinking beer, and others.

The Ancient Car

The uniqueness of the reliefs makes Jagaraga temple a unique temple that cannot be found anywhere else in Bali. Moreover, in this temple, you can also find the existence of Patung Men Brayut. This statue is a folk tale that tells the story of a mother with many children who all compete to cling to her.

HISTORICAL WITNESS

According to historical records, Dutch forces succeeded in occupying Jagaraga temple in 1848. But, the occupation of the temple by the Dutch at that time did not take place smoothly. There was resistance carried out by forces led by Patih I Gusti Ketut Jelantik.

The battle that took place in the area around the temple was very fierce. In fact, this incident is known as the Puputan Jagaraga. Because of its location in the village of Jagaraga. In this battle, a total of 2,700 Balinese fighters were killed. Meanwhile, as many as 400 Dutch troops, including middle officers lost their lives in this war.
